Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope on Sept. 11

RENO — The fourth annual Walk in Memory, Walk for Hope will take place on Sept. 11 in several locations around Nevada during National Suicide Prevention Week.

Nevada has the fifth highest rate of suicide in the nation with 471 deaths, according to a 2007 poll. Nearly 8.3 million adults in the United States had serious thoughts of suicide in the past year, according to the first national scientific survey of its size on this public health problem by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. The study also shows that 2.3 million adult Americans made a suicide plan in the past year and that 1.1 million attempted suicide.

Reno’s Walk in Memory will be held at Idlewild Park at 8 a.m. The walk, sponsored by the Nevada Coalition for Suicide Prevention, will be about 3.2 miles long and is open to the public.
