SUTCLIFFE — The 2010 Pyramid Lake Sprint Triathlon is Saturday starting at 8 a.m. at the Sutcliffe Marina. The event includes a half-mile swim, a 14-mile bike ride and a three-mile run.

Packet pick-up is from 4 to 7 p.m. today at Eclipse Running Store, 6990 S. McCarran Blvd. Race day packet pick-up is from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m.

The course description states that 68- to 72-degree water is expected, so wetsuits are recommended for the half-mile loop. The bike course is fast with few rolling hills; the course goes north on State Route 445 to halfway turnaround (Warrior Point), then returns to the marina. The run course is flat and fast; it goes in a loop south of the marina via pavement and an old railroad grade.

For the past five years, the Reno Area Triathletes has been the race director for the Pyramid Lake Triathlon and this year’s event drew a record number, 260 participants. The rare feature with this event is all the proceeds from the race will be given back to the community, nearly $50,000 give to local nonprofits over the past five years.

From the 2009 race nearly $14,000 was given to Sierra Nevada Community Aquatics, Reno Water Polo, McQueen High School band, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, the Boys and Girls Club, St. Vincent’s Dining Hall and the Reno Police Department’s Victims Service Unit.
