RENO — At 10:45 a.m. May 8, a pedestrian crossing westbound within the marked crosswalk at Kietzke Lane and Roberts Street was struck by a 1999 Chevrolet Tahoe traveling northbound.  The pedestrian was pronounced dead at Renown Regional Medical Center an hour later.

Wednesday, Reno police made an arrest in connection with the death.

Charles Howard, the driver of the Chevrolet Tahoe, was arrested on three warrants issued in the Reno Municipal Court. The charges were vehicular manslaughter, right of way/yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk and passing a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk.

Police discovered that Howard was placing a cell phone call at the time of the accident and did not see the victim in the crosswalk or the vehicle stopped to yield to the pedestrian.

The victim was identified by police as Frederick Douglass Murchison, 82, of Reno.
